History and Governance

Following a visit by Sue and Leonard Cheshire, the Ryder-Cheshire Ivanhoe Home was established 1981 to provide friendly, low cost accommodation for people from country areas, interstate and overseas attending hospitals in Melbourne for treatment. The Ivanhoe Home operates 365 days a year and has accommodated over 15,000 people. It is often fully booked.

The Ivanhoe Home is run by the Ryder-Cheshire Victorian Homes Foundation Inc. It is an independent, not-for-profit organisation registered with the Australian Charities and Not-For-Profit Commission. All members of the Committee of Management give their time on a voluntary basis. The Ivanhoe Home does not seek or receive government funding and relies heavily on the efforts and generosity of many volunteers, donors, service clubs, churches and community groups.

Facilities and Staff

The Ivanhoe Home consists of 43 self-contained studios in the style of bed sitter units. They are spread across three buildings and set in peaceful garden surrounds. Each unit has two or three single beds, an en suite bathroom, a fully equipped kitchenette, digital TV and telephone. Bed linen and towels are supplied. Laundry facilities are available in each building. There is adequate parking located on-site and in Donaldson Street.

The Ivanhoe Home is staffed by either/or office manager, resident carers and volunteers. A member of staff is available at all times to offer support and assistance, however medical supervision, nursing care and meals are not provided.

Location

The Ivanhoe Home is located in Donaldson Street, Ivanhoe. It is a pleasant residential suburb located about 9kms north of the Melbourne CBD. The area has very good shopping, transport, medical and recreational facilities.

There is a bus stop around the corner from the Ivanhoe Home. It is about a 10 minute walk to the main shopping centre and train station. The local swimming pool and gymnasium are located at the end of Donaldson Street.

Who can stay at the Ivanhoe Home?

Patients and their carers coming from the country, interstate and overseas for treatment at any hospital in Melbourne are eligible to apply for accommodation at the Ivanhoe Home. Initial bookings must be made or confirmed by a social worker, liaison nurse or other professional at the treating hospital. People who have previously stayed at the Ivanhoe Home may make subsequent bookings directly themselves. Please contact us or refer to our web site for further information about accommodation.

Volunteers and Donors

The Ivanhoe Home is deeply grateful for the support of many volunteers, service clubs, churches, community groups and individual donors. Please contact us if you would like to become a volunteer or donor or support the Ivanhoe Home in any other way.
