Remembering Sue Ryder and her Worldwide Legacy

Margaret Susan Cheshire, Baroness Ryder of Warsaw, Lady Cheshire, CMG, OBE, best known as Sue Ryder, was a British volunteer with Special Operations Executive in the Second World War, and a member of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry, who afterwards established charitable organizations notably the Sue Ryder Foundation.

She was one of the first people to set up charity shops in the 1950s and today there is still a network of over 400 shops.

She was an incredible force for good, working long hours, living frugally and always embodying her aim to do what you can for the person in front of you.

Along the way she met Leonard Cheshire and learned that they had similar interests and outlooks to people who were suffering. They joined in marriage in India and together set up the Ryder-Cheshire Foundation for the relief of suffering without discrimination by establishing Raphael in Dehradun in Northern India. Raphael will celebrate its 65th Anniversary in April next year.

This coming year, on 3 July 2024, Sue would have turned 100 years old. Lady Ryder of Warsaw Memorial Trust (LRWMT) has has invited us to celebrate her legacy.

We are offering this invitation for you to use to gather together to honour Sue and her legacy of helping those in need which continues to this very day throughout the world.

The invitation is a word template that you can use by down loading it from the RCA website and personalise to your own style of celebration. Please use this link

You may wish to gather as a Foundation, Support Group, Ryder-Cheshire Home, family or friends or colleagues or school or church group or any group of interested people. It may be a fundraising or awareness raising event or both. The scope of this invitation rests in your imagination such as morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, evening dinner with invited guests who can speak on Sue’s legacy.

We would love to have a small report of your event with some photos to publish in The Red Feather, RCA website, RCA Face book and Instagram.

Please contact Dianne in the contacts list on page 7 for further information.

Thanks go to LRWMT for their highly respectful and creative initiative.
