I  wish to thank my friend Joy for introducing me to volunteering at Klibur Domin (KD), Timor-Leste. From 20 August to 3 September 2025, I had the privilege of joining  this caring team.

With the assistance of KD staff, we were able to distribute 50 washable, reusable, brightly coloured menstrual kits to girls at KD and in a community school near Tibar and another in Ermena.  We educated the 50 students in anatomy, the process of menstruation, self-care to avoid infection and hand washing. The washable kits last at least three years, usually longer. No cost, no leakage, no more missed school days and no more period poverty. Assinia, the physiotherapist at KD did a marvellous job translating during the session. Maria Anina was also very helpful.

Joy and I provided diversional therapy to the students in the form of  many and varied craft sessions, where fine motor skills were enhanced and an appreciation of plastic  recycling was stressed. Communication was in English to increase their language skills.  These daily sessions were also run at Escola Imaculada Coracao de Maria just across the road from Klibur Domin.  As the students came to know Joy and me a little better, it was lovely to see their personalities emerge  enjoying much laughter and many hugs. The staff was also keen to be involved.

During my two week stay, we made hair scrunchies, knitted dollies, wool angels, plastic lanterns, bookmarks, word art pictures, plastic dollies, beaded bag tags and bracelets.

My volunteering time was most enjoyable and I was happy to share my time and skills.
