Sue Ryder – Remembering her Legacy on her 100th Birthday

Many events were hosted around the world on or near what would have been Sue Ryder’s 100th birthday. Here is a collection of some. 

5 May

New Zealand Ryder-Cheshire Foundation celebrated Sue Ryder’s 100th birthday early honouring the extraordinary legacy she had left for us all. We held a fundraising dinner and auction at a local restaurant. 

1 July

Southern Vale Mothers’ Union Branch gathered over coffee in Wilunga, South Australia, to remember the work and life of Sue Ryder. They raised money to donate to support her continuing work via Ryder-Cheshire Australia. 

2 July

Lady Ryder-Memorial Trust at St Katherine’s Retreat House, Parmoor, UK conducted celebrations which included an afternoon tea with Dr Elizabeth Cheshire and the planting of a Pilgrim Rose in Sue’s memory. This was followed by a dinner where Sue’s work from around the world was highlighted. 

3 July

Mount Gambier Homes, South Australia, hosted a morning tea at the Ryder Home where a wonderful donation was presented by the Mount Gambier Rotary Club for future projects in memory of their member Dr Jerry Leech. Messages were received from the South Australian Governor, the Honourable Frances Adamson AC and Dr Elizabeth Cheshire. 

3 July

Domov Sue Ryder Czech Republic, Prague remembered and celebrated Sue Ryder’s work.

Sue Ryder Foundation Ireland hosted an evening event at their Shop in Clonmel, Republic of Ireland

4 July

Dr Simon Selby, Honorary Consul Republic Poland, Warsaw, remembered Lady Ryder of Warsaw, who was part of the Poland Section of SOE, Supporting Silent Unseen (Cichociemni) when they embarked on perilous WW2 missions. She established homes for those who had been affected by the trauma and injuries sustained during WW2. 

7 July

Ballarat Ryder-Cheshire Support Group, Victoria, hosted an afternoon tea at the Craig’s Royal Hotel. Honorary Life Memberships were presented to Trish Twaits, David Searl and Robert Brookes for their exemplary work undertaken in the spirit of Sue Ryder’s work. 

10 November

Ryder-Cheshire Foundation Victoria and the Victorian Ryder-Cheshire Homes, gathered for a garden afternoon tea at the Homes in Ivanhoe. A cascading rosemary garden was planted to honour Sue Ryder’s work and 100th birthday.
