Back in 2012 I took a year sabbatical from work and life in London and through a twist of fate was fortunate enough to find myself at Raphael volunteering for two months.
I can honestly say it changed my whole outlook on life and I’ve returned there, bar covid times, every year since.
Arriving for the first time I felt a little out of my depth but meeting with other like-minded volunteers, the staff, children and residents I was soon at ease in the beautiful grounds and comfortable accommodation.
Having had no previous experience teaching or in special education I didn’t feel I had any particular skills to offer but soon found I could contribute in ways that I didn’t expect.
I gave computer tutorials and English lessons to the staff, assisted teachers in class, made classroom posters and teaching aids, painted murals around the campus, photographed all the pupils much to their joy, helped in the candle workshop and played various sports with the children during and after school time which was my favourite part of the day.
Everyone is good at something and finding that particular thing in these beautiful people filled me with such happiness.
I have just come back from the incredible 65th Founders’ Day celebrations at Raphael and felt utterly privileged to be there and to be part of something so very special doing such brilliant things for those less fortunate. I am counting the days until I can return back to my favourite place in India.
