On Friday, 16 May 2025, Dianne, Rachel, and I had the absolute pleasure of attending the ever-delightful Bina Day at Ballarat Grammar Junior School – an annual celebration that never fails to lift spirits and spark joy.

Bina Day is a special day named in honour of the school’s very first Raphael resident they sponsored.

It was a genuine delight to meet Sian Rawlinson, the newly appointed Head of Junior School. For her very first Bina Day, she was thoughtfully presented with a care pack from staff – complete with an L plate – symbolising her newcomer status.  With a warm smile and a spark of anticipation, she appeared both eager and a touch nervous to see what the day had in store.

With his usual flair, the charismatic Julian Hopkins, Deputy Head of the Junior School, reprised his role as MC and resident comedian, keeping smiles wide and laughter rolling.

This year, we had the special honour of sharing the ‘Royal Balcony’ with a courageous student preparing for medical treatment – a gentle reminder of the strength and heart that define this incredible community. He was crowned the King of Bina Day.After warm welcomes from both Julian and Dianne, the crowd erupted into a rousing rendition of the ‘Bina Day’ song, sung to the upbeat tune of ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day.’ (It’s still stuck in my head!).

Rachel and I then officially opened the day, and right on cue, the joyful stampede began – hundreds of children charging off to their respective stalls, screams and laughter echoing across the grounds. It’s a sight that never gets old.

Rachel and I spent a wonderful couple of hours soaking in the atmosphere, meandering from stall to stall, chatting with bright-eyed students, and, of course, stocking up on all sorts of delicious and crafty goodies.

The creativity, care, and collaboration – no doubt thanks to the incredible efforts of students, parents and staff – were on full display. Every detail radiated dedication, creativity and love.

I genuinely wish the entire Ryder-Cheshire family could have been there to experience this remarkable event – it truly was something special.
