A very important appointment in Timor-Leste!
Earlier this year, Dr Rui Maria de Araujo became the fifth Prime Minister of independent Timor-Leste. Dr Araujo has had a distinguished career as a medical practitioner and administrator and has previously held the positions of Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister. Until recently, he was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Klibur Domin (the home which Ryder-Cheshire Australia supports in Timor-Leste) and still serves as a member of the Board. Dr Araujo has contributed very generously of his time and expertise to the support and development of Klibur Domin, and we all wish him great success in his role leading Timor-Leste.

The new version will be at the same web address (www.ryder-cheshire.com) but will be streamlined, more easily up-dated and will incorporate new search functions and links. So please keep an eye out for our new look web-site. Continue reading A Round up of Recent News from Ryder-Cheshire Australia
There has been a lot of renovation work undertaken at Klibur Domin over the past few months and the photos on this page should ‘say a thousand words’ about some of the very successful results that have been achieved.
The kitchen has been completely remodelled and fitted out with gleaming new, hygienic stainless steel work surfaces, and the old annex next to it has been removed. The new kitchen is now in use and is very much appreciated by the staff. Creating such a wonderful facility is a credit to all the people at Klibur Domin and Ryder-Cheshire Australia who had a hand in its design and construction, and also those who have supported the activities of the Ryder-Cheshire Victoria Committee which provided the funding. It is with great pleasure that we can inform you that Joaquim Soares, the Director of Klibur Domin (the Ryder-Cheshire Home in Timor-Leste) has been presented with a national human rights award. The award ceremony took place in the President’s Palace in Dilli in December, with the President of Timor-Leste, Taur Matan Ruak making the presentations. Joaquim was nominated by a number of the organisations of which he is a member, and the award recognises his work across these various organisations in advocating for people with disabilities and for their health care, over the past nine years.
Everyone who has met Joaquim and seen his work at Klibur Domin, will join in sending him their very heart felt best wishes for this extremely well deserved award, and will rejoice that his incredible ability and hard work has been recognised at the national level within Timor-Leste. Peter is the dedicated, long serving President of Ryder-Cheshire Australia and was the driving force behind the inception and growth of Klibur Domin (the Ryder-Cheshire Home in Timor Leste). The book is a thoroughly researched and yet deeply personal account of the ‘perfect storm’ of issues within both Ryder-Cheshire Australia and Timor Leste that led to Peter’s Christmas morning epiphany in 2000, and to the ensuing search for the right project, premises and people. It is a great story encompassing the efforts of all those who have contributed to the establishment and development of Klibur Domin. The Ryder-Cheshire goal of working to relieve suffering is clearly evident throughout the book, and you can certainly see why the Tetum title Klibur Domin, which means sharing with love, was chosen as the name of this unique place.
